Difference between SMS & MMS Messaging

SMS and MMS messaging are way different but they appear the same in your cell phones. They have some notable differences and we are here to talk about the same. Let’s begin with the definitions:

What are SMS messages?

To put it simple, SMS messages are simple text-only messages that can be transmitted over traditional cellular phone networks. There is no need for an internet connection when you need to send or receive a SMS message.

It is a very simple and affordable way to send messages to almost any mobile service.

What are MMS messages?

They are similar to SMS messages in some ways. Though, these kinds of messages include images, videos, and sound. As it carries multimedia, it needs an internet connection to send or receive the texts.

In most cases, MMS is not as effective as SMS messages when it comes to sending text-only messages.

Key Differences between SMS and MMS Messages:

When it comes to count the differences between SMS and MMS messages is a handful. The differences affect the experience and costs of using each of these services for business. These differences stem from the networks and data capabilities required to send MMS messages.

1.      Their sending path:

SMS messages are sent over cellular networks, which requires only standard cellular data packs. An SMS message is sent from the sender’s phone to the nearest cell tower. Then it is transferred to the SMS message center, which then sends it to the cell tower near the recipient, and then finally to the recipient.

While it works quite differently for the MMS messages. For sending an MMS message you need to have an active internet pack on your cell phone. When it is sent from your phone, it is submitted to a multimedia messaging service center (MMSC). Then an SMS notification is sent to the SMSC (Short message service center) by the MMSC. This notifies the recipient’s device that there’s an MMS message waiting on the MMSC. At the final step of this process, the message is received at the recipient phone from the MMSC.

2.      Ability to send media:

As mentioned earlier in the definition part, SMS and MMS messages have a huge difference when it comes to sending media.

The The higher cost of MMS messages is justified as it carries much more material than an SMS message. Messages with visual or audio content are more engaging than text-only messages.

Though, that doesn’t create any justification for your choice. There are many aspects in which SMS messages are better than the MMS ones.

3.      Space and Character Limitations:

The characters in MMS messages are much larger than the SMS ones they are sent through cellular data.

There are 160-character limit in the SMS messages. While MMS messages have a 1600-character limit. MMS messages also have data limits. The carrier limit in MMS messages is up to 3.75MB of data. Though, some also have lower carrier limits.

It takes up some resources to transmit an MMS message. So, you have to send MMS messages less frequently than SMS messages.

Though, the message frequency limitations are usually measured in the number of messages per second or minute.

4.      SMS and MMS cost difference:

The typical cost to send SMS messages is between $0.01 and $0.05 per text. However, it differs from carrier to carrier.

With most of the carriers, sending an MMS message with media i.e., some visual content costs about the same as sending four or five SMS messages.

5.      Device Compatibility:

If you are sending MMS messages then device compatibility can be a point to be noted. Almost any mobile device can receive an SMS message. But with MMS messages, only advanced smartphones can receive it.

There are 2.71 billion smartphone users, so it isn’t a specific problem for sending and receiving MMS messages.

Though, if you are going for critical communication, like reminders, payments, etc., then going with the SMS message is the best option for you. As anyone with any kind of phone can receive SMS texts.
